Avatar Movie Review

I watched the most talked about film “Avatar” and just after finishing the movie that I found out why it had that title. For sure, internet users are familiar with this word especially those who are into on line gaming or some social network sites wherein you are asked to put an image to a name, be it a copied one or your real picture, an avatar.

Anyway, back to the movie, the setting was from a far planet named Pandora, where people or Navis living here have their own culture, language and appearance very different from humans. Aside from that, humans can’t breathe in their planet without the help of a gas mask.

Major character here was Jake, the crippled ex-war veteran who had a scientist brother who died and was a member of a group studying the inhabitants of Pandora. He was then offered to be his replacement and was sent to that planet in exchange of a huge compensation plus a chance to have a fresh start.

There was also Grace, played by Sigourney Weaver, a scientist in charged of the program, whom at first, doesn’t like Jake because she said he can’t be of any help to them but later on became acquainted with each other especially when they are on their avatar self.

To be an avatar, a person was placed in a tube like machine, put into sleep, then their mind travel to their avatar self, a genetically creature with genes of a human and a Navi.

They were then brought to the Pandora community to mingle and be able to study their way of living. But other member of the program especially those in the military, have other reasons of joining. They were after a precious gem, an Obtanium which sold a million bucks a kilo and can be found in the midst of the huge trees, where inhabitants of Pandora lives.

Meanwhile, Jake, upon being with the Pandora’s inhabitants, got attached to a female Navi named Neytiri. She was the daughter of the King and Queen of the Navi clan. She was assigned to teach Jake of how a Navi lives, their language and culture. Jake and Neytiri later on fell in love with each other.

When the military attacked the Navi’s, Neytiri’s father died and she got really mad at Jake. Navis then learned that Jake and Grace were humans and were with the people who destroyed their planet. They were later on tied by other Navis and were supposed to be left in the midst of the war. But Neytiri’s mother freed them and instead asked for their help.

Jake, being closely attached to the Navi’s considered himself as one of them encouraged the other tribe to fight the humans with him. He even prayed to the Navi’s God, Eywa to help them win the battle. And when they thought that the war is coming to its end, seeing the Navi’s dying in numbers, with the humans almost taking over, wild animals came to the rescue and helped them win.

At the end of the movie, the humans were seen heading back to their space craft with the Navi’s escorting them. They were sent back to Earth but Jake and some humans were allowed to stay at Pandora. Grace died and so was Trudy, the girl military pilot who stayed at their side till her last breath. Jake on the other hand, asked Neytiri’s mom to turn himself permanently in his Avatar self leaving his human body behind. Truly this movie deserves two thumbs up with their 3D effects and a unique story.
